How to Measure Ring Size at Home

Unsure about your ring size? These simple at-home methods will help you find your perfect fit.

Method 1: Use a Free Ring Sizer

A physical ring sizer is the most reliable way to measure your ring size at home. Request a free, unisex plastic ring sizer from Brilliant Earth to easily find your perfect fit.

Our plastic ring sizer provides an accurate, reusable way to measure your finger before purchasing. It’s designed to mimic the feel of an actual ring, giving you a true sense of how each size will fit on your hand. All you have to do is wrap our sizer around the finger you'd like to measure and adjust it to the size that feels right. The perfect size will be snug enough not to slip off but loose enough to slide over the knuckle without too much resistance.

Method 2: Use a Printable Ring Sizer

Need to find your ring size ASAP? You can download our printable ring sizer for a quick, at-home measurement. This option is helpful if you need your ring size right away, though we always recommend using our free plastic ring sizer or visiting a Brilliant Earth showroom for the most accurate results.

What you'll need:

  • Printer & paper
  • Scissors

Steps:

  1. Print a Printable Ring Sizer & Conversion Chart. Set page scaling to "100" in your print settings and use 8.5 x 11-inch standard paper.
  2. Cut out the sizer. Follow the provided guidelines to carefully cut out the paper ring sizer and the slot as instructed.
  3. Wrap it around your finger. Slide the pointed end through the slit and gently pull until the ring sizer fits snugly around the base of your finger.
  4. Read your size. The number visible through the slit corresponds to your ring size.

Method 3: Use a Ring You Already Have

If you already own a ring that fits the intended finger, you can use it to determine your ring size.

What you'll need:

  • Printer & paper
  • An existing ring

Steps:

  1. Print a Printable Ring Sizer & Conversion ChartSet page scaling to "100" in your print settings and use 8.5 x 11-inch standard paper.
  2. Select a well-fitting ring. Use a ring that comfortably slides on and off the finger you’re measuring.
  3. Match the ring to the chart. Place the ring directly over the printed circles until the inside edge aligns perfectly with one of the circle outlines.
  4. Check the alignment carefully. You should be able to see the circle just touching the inside edge of the ring without any overlap.
  5. Confirm the size. The number in the matching circle represents your ring size.

Method 4: Use a Tape Measure

Using a flexible tape measure allows you to calculate the circumference of your finger directly to determine your ring size.

What you'll need:

  • A flexible tape measure

Steps:

  1. Wrap the tape measure around your finger. Choose the finger you plan to wear the ring on and gently wrap a flexible measuring tape around the base of the finger.
  2. Note the millimeter or inch measurement. Record the point where the tape overlaps, ensuring it’s snug but not tight. A ring should slide comfortably over the knuckle and rest securely at the base of the finger.
  3. Convert to ring size. Use a ring size conversion chart to match your finger’s circumference measurement to the corresponding ring size.

If you don’t have a tape measure:

  • Use string, yarn, floss, or a thin strip of paper.
  • Wrap it around your finger as described above and mark where it overlaps.
  • Lay it flat and measure the length with a ruler, then compare the measurement to a ring size chart.

Ring Size Measurement Tips

These considerations will help ensure the most comfortable and reliable fit.

  • Measure the Hand You’ll Wear the Ring On: Our dominant hands are generally slightly larger. Always measure the hand and finger you plan to wear the ring on, as even a small size difference can affect fit.
  • Consider the Width of the Ring: Rings with wider bands fit more tightly than thinner ones. Plan to size up by at least a half size for chunky bands (>4mm) and size down accordingly for very thin designs (<1.3mm). Note that ring sizes are generally measured in millimeters (mm) and are not sized by inch.
  • Account for Temperature: Temperature affects finger size, fingers shrink when cold and expand when warm. Take measurements when your hands are at a normal, comfortable temperature to avoid inaccurate sizing.
  • Measure at the Right Time of Day: Fingers naturally change size throughout the day based on activity, hydration, and diet. The best time to measure is toward the middle or end of the day, when your fingers are at their largest.
  • Test for Comfort: If your knuckle is more prominent than the base of your finger, measure both areas. Then, choose a size in between those measurements as rings need to fit over the knuckle but not be too loose or too tight to wear comfortably.
  • Measure More Than Once: Finger size can fluctuate slightly throughout the day or week, so it’s helpful to measure multiple times. Taking two or three measurements and comparing them will give you a more accurate average.
  • Err on the Side of Caution: If you're in between ring sizes, we suggest sizing up rather than sizing down. When in doubt, rings can be resized down more easily than up!

FAQ

How do you determine your ring size?

To determine your ring size, measure the circumference of your finger or the diameter of a ring that already fits well. The ring should slide comfortably over your knuckle and rest securely at the base of your finger, snug enough to stay in place, but loose enough to remove without effort. Once you have your measurement, compare it to a ring size chart to find your corresponding size.

How do you know your ring size?

You’ll know your correct ring size when the ring fits securely at the base of your finger and glides smoothly over your knuckle with gentle resistance. If the ring feels tight or leaves an impression, try a half size larger. If it spins or slides too easily, choose a slightly smaller size.

How do you check ring size?

To double-check your ring size, use more than one sizing method or repeat your measurement at different times of day. You can verify your results by comparing them to a professional jeweler’s tools or by trying on sample rings in a showroom. A consistent measurement across multiple methods confirms accuracy.

How do ring sizes work?

Ring sizes are standardized measurements that represent the inner circumference or diameter of a ring. In the United States, ring sizes are typically indicated by numbers ranging from size 3 to size 13, including half and quarter sizes. Other regions, such as the United Kingdom, Europe, and Asia, use alphabetical or numerical systems that correspond to the same physical dimensions.

How are ring sizes measured?

Ring sizes are measured based on the inside circumference (the distance around the inner band) or the inside diameter (the width across the center) of the ring. Jewelers use precise sizing tools to ensure accuracy. Most charts display both millimeter and inch conversions so you can easily compare across different international sizing systems.

What is a standard ring size?

The most common ring sizes for women in the United States are sizes 6 and 7, in other countries this converts to:

  • Canada, Mexico: 6 and 7
  • UK, Australia, Ireland, New Zealand, South Africa: L 1/2  and N 1/2
  • France: 52 and 54.5
  • Germany, Russia, Ukraine, Asia: 16 1/2 and 17 1/4
  • India, China, Japan, South America, Turkey, Israel: 12 and 14
  • Italy, Spain, Netherlands, Switzerland: 11 ½ and 14

The most common ring sizes for men in the United States are sizes 9 and 10, in other countries this converts to:

  • Canada, Mexico: 9 and 10
  • UK, Australia, Ireland, New Zealand, South Africa: R 1/2 and T 1/2
  • France: 60 and 62
  • Germany, Russia, Ukraine, Asia: 19 and 19 3/4
  • India, China, Japan, South America, Turkey, Israel: 18 and 20
  • Italy, Spain, Netherlands, Switzerland: 19 and 21 ½

How can you measure a ring without a sizer?

If you don’t have a ring sizer, use a string, ribbon, or strip of paper. Wrap it around your finger, mark where it overlaps, and then measure the length with a ruler. Match that measurement in millimeters to a ring size conversion chart. This method is quick, easy, and can be done with everyday household items.

Are ring sizes unisex?

Yes, ring sizes are unisex. The ring sizing system uses the same scale for everyone. The difference is not in the sizing system itself, but in the typical size ranges that different genders tend to wear.

Another factor to consider is the width of the band. Wider bands (which are more common in men's styles) will require a slightly larger size to fit comfortably than narrower bands (which are more common in women's styles).

How should a ring fit?

A ring that fits appropriately will slide over your knuckle with minimal friction and sit snugly on your finger without feeling too tight. You should feel slight resistance but not need to apply too much force to take it on and off.

Are there any types of rings that can’t be resized?

Certain rings, such as eternity and open bands, and alternative metal styles cannot be resized due to the structure or material of their designs. If your ring cannot be resized, we'll include that information on the product detail page of your specific style. You may also exchange a ring that cannot be resized within our 30-day free exchange period.
