What is a marquise cut diamond?

The curving, oblong shape of a marquise engagement ring’s diamond originates from Jean Antoinette Poisson, the Marquise of Pompadour. In the 1700’s, King Louis XV of France commissioned a jeweler to design a diamond cut after her lips, which he thought of as perfect. Marquise diamond rings are also referred to as “navette”, meaning “little boat” in French, because of the diamond’s boat-like shape. Like other elongated diamond shapes, marquise diamond engagement rings often appear larger than other diamonds of the same carat weight due to their long and narrow shape. Marquise diamond ring designs are striking in a variety of styles and metal types. Three stone and vintage inspired settings make for especially unique marquise diamond engagement rings.

The curving, oblong shape of a marquise cut diamond is flattering and distinctive. This regal shape, which originated in the court of King Louis XIV of France and is also referred to as the navette, or “little boat,” has stood the test of time. These rings provide the perfect showcase for this unique and storied shape.
