How to Measure Men's Ring Size

There are several reliable ways to determine your ring size, whether at home or with professional assistance. For detailed step-by-step instructions on each method, visit our full How to Measure Ring Size guide

To ensure accuracy:

  • Measure the correct hand and finger. Even small differences between hands can affect fit. Always measure the specific hand and finger where you plan to wear the ring.
  • Size up for wide bands. Wider bands fit more tightly than thinner ones, which is especially relevant for men's rings. Plan to size up around a half size for wide bands (over 4mm) and size down slightly for very thin designs (under 1.3mm).
  • Measure at the right temperature and time of day. Fingers shrink when cold and expand when warm, so try to measure when your hands are at a normal temperature, ideally toward the middle or end of the day when your fingers are at their largest.
  • Measure more than once. Taking two or three measurements at different times and comparing results gives you a more accurate average.
  • Account for your knuckle. If your knuckle is noticeably larger than the base of your finger, measure both areas and choose a size in between so the ring clears the knuckle without sitting too loose.
  • When in doubt, size up. If you fall between two sizes, go with the larger one. Rings can generally be resized down more easily than up.

For the best fit, your ring should be snug enough to stay in place yet loose enough to slide smoothly over your knuckle. For the most accurate results, we recommend determining ring size with our free ring sizer or a Brilliant Earth showroom visit

Method 1: Request a Free Ring Sizer

A ring sizer is one of the most accurate ways to measure your ring size at home.

You can order our free, unisex ring sizer. It's reusable and designed to mimic the feel of an actual ring, giving you a true sense of how each size sits on your hand.

Wrap the sizer around the finger you'd like to measure and adjust it to the size that feels right. The number to the left of the arrow is your US ring size.

Method 2: Use a Printable Ring Sizer

If you need your ring size right away, our printable ring sizer provides a convenient at-home option.

Print the Printable Ring Sizer & Conversion Chart at 100% scale on 8.5 x 11-inch standard paper, cut out the sizer following the provided guidelines, slide the pointed end through the slit, and gently pull until it fits snugly around the base of your finger. The number visible through the slit corresponds to your ring size.

Method 3: Use a Ring You Already Have

If you already own a ring that fits the intended finger, you can use it to determine your size without measuring your finger directly.

Print the Printable Ring Sizer & Conversion Chart at 100% scale on 8.5 x 11-inch standard paper, then place the ring over the printed circles until the inside edge aligns with one of the outlines. The number in the matching circle represents your ring size.

Make sure the circle just touches the inside edge of the ring without any overlap for the most accurate match.

Method 4: Use a Tape Measure

A flexible tape measure lets you calculate your finger's circumference directly. Wrap the tape around the base of the finger you plan to wear the ring on, note the millimeter or inch measurement where the tape overlaps, and use a ring size conversion chart to match that number to your corresponding ring size.

If you don't have a tape measure, use string, yarn, or a thin strip of paper. Wrap it around your finger, mark where it overlaps, lay it flat, and measure the length with a ruler. Then compare the measurement to a ring size chart.

A men's printable ring size chart allows you to identify your ring size from home using a physical printout. It's a helpful quick-reference tool, especially when paired with one of the measurement methods above.

FAQ

What is the average ring size for men?

The average ring size for men typically falls between size 9 and size 10 in the US sizing system. A size 9 ring has an inner circumference of approximately 59.5 mm, while a size 10 measures around 62.1 mm.

Are men’s and women’s ring sizes the same?

Men's and women's rings use the same sizing scale, meaning a size 7 men's ring and a size 7 women's ring have the same internal dimensions. The difference is in common size ranges and ring proportions.

The most common size for women's rings falls between sizes 6 and 7, while the most common size for men's rings ranges from size 9 to 10.

Band width also plays a role in how the ring fits. Wider bands, which are more common in men's styles, may feel tighter and sometimes require sizing up by half a size for comfort.

What is comfort fit?

Comfort fit rings have gently curved edges on the inside of the band, unlike standard or "flat fit" bands, which have a straight inner surface. This contour minimizes friction and pressure, creating a more natural feel, especially for wider bands.

Comfort fit designs are particularly popular for men's wedding bands because they balance a secure fit with added ease for everyday wear. The subtle curve can make the ring feel slightly larger than a standard fit, so it's worth comparing both styles when determining your size.
