Our Pathway to Beyond Conflict Free™ Diamonds

Since our founding twenty years ago, Brilliant Earth has been on a mission to transform the jewelry industry through ethical and responsible practices. Inspired by our founders’ commitment to drive positive change within the industry, we have focused on a multilayered approach that addresses sourcing standards, enhances traceability, and engages with suppliers across the value chain. Our two-decade track record of sustainability and responsible sourcing includes working closely with these partners to improve their ethical, environmental and social impact.

Our Beyond Conflict Free™ standard remains a pioneering one. When introduced in 2005, our aim was to go above and beyond the industry norm. We go well beyond the Kimberley Process standards to source natural diamonds that not only come from conflict-free regions with low to moderate Conflict Affected and High Risk Areas (CAHRA) ratings, but also contribute to the betterment of communities and responsibly manage the environment. Through our Beyond Conflict Free™ standard and other programs like Moyo Gems, we have seen firsthand that natural diamonds and gemstones, when governed properly, have the potential for positive, far-reaching social and economic impacts.

As part of our ongoing quest to improve mining practices worldwide, we are expanding our offerings to include Pathway to Beyond Conflict Free™ diamonds. These are traceable diamonds mined by operators and countries that are on a documented, verifiable pathway towards more responsible mining practices.

Pathway to Beyond Conflict Free™ Diamonds

We are beginning this journey in Angola, a country that's known for diamonds with exceptional quality. Diamonds represent Angola's second-leading export, with production steadily increasing from over 20 diamond mines and exploration projects throughout the country. While Angola's diamond industry is still evolving, we are supportive of their growing investment in responsible mining practices and are encouraged by their ongoing progress and commitments. For example, Endiama, the state-run national diamond company of Angola, as well as Angola’s two largest diamond mines, Catoca and Luele, are participating in transformational investments and initiatives including social and environmental certifications, community programs for educational and economic development, and blockchain-powered traceability.

Social Programs for Communities Surrounding the Mines

Angola's National Development Plan utilizes mining revenues to support food security, employment creation and poverty reduction in diamond mining regions. As part of our Pathway to Beyond Conflict Free™ program, we are closely following up on projects and programs, such as the construction of primary and elementary schools, vocational training and university facilities, a Diamond Development Hub for domestic diamond polishing and a polishing school, and housing for communities neighboring the mines.
