TREATMENTS AND CARE

Gemstone Treatments:

Gemstone Treatment Care
Sapphire Heat (unless specified to be unheated in the product details) Sapphires are easy to care for at home. Sapphires can be cleaned using any cleaner that is specifically designed for use with jewelry, or, if set in gold or platinum, with warm water and a splash of grease removing dish soap or cleaning detergent. Avoid using any products that include moisturizers, abrasives or anti-static agents, as they will leave a residue and scratch the metal. Scrub gently with a soft bristle toothbrush and rinse well. Dry with a soft cloth. For deeper cleaning, allow the piece to soak for 10 to 20 minutes, and then follow the remaining steps of the above procedure. This process should not be used for sapphires set in silver as many detergents can react poorly with silver.
Ruby Heat (unless specified to be unheated in the product details) Rubies are easy to care for at home. Rubies can be cleaned using any cleaner that is specifically designed for use with jewelry, or, if set in gold or platinum, with warm water and a splash of grease removing dish or cleaning detergent. This process should not be used for rubies set in silver as many detergents can react poorly with silver.
Emerald Infusion - Oiling Due to their brittleness, emeralds must be handled gently. Cleaning techniques that involve chemicals, high heat or steam are not advised, as they can cause the gem to break or the oil filler to dissipate. Special care should be taken when wearing emerald jewelry given emeralds are prone to fracture if roughly handled.

Definitions of Treatments:

Treatment Description
Heat Treatment The process of applying heat to enhance the color or clarity of a gemstone. This is a standard industry practice for many gemstones. No radiation, chemicals or health risks are involved in this process.
Infusion The process of filling a gemstone with oil, resin, wax, or other material to improve its appearance. The filling may be colored or colorless.
Irradiation The process of exposing a gemstone to controlled radiation to improve its color. It is usually heated thereafter. The treatment is permanent.
Bleaching The process of using a chemical agent to enhance a gemstone's color for a more uniformed appearance. This treatment is most commonly used for pearls.

Brilliant Earth is committed to maintaining high gemstone quality standards. As new gemstone treatment technologies and techniques continue to develop, enhancements can sometimes be difficult, or in rare cases impossible, to identify. To mitigate this risk, we work closely with industry experts to stay abreast of new techniques and developments.

CARAT WEIGHT

TOTAL CARAT WEIGHT DETAILS:

Brilliant Earth maintains strict standards for carat weights listed on our diamond jewelry. Some styles may have slight carat weight variation from one piece to another. In these cases, the total carat weight is represented as a fractional carat weight. Below you can find information on our total carat weight tolerance.

Label Min. Ct. Tw. Max. Ct. Tw.
1/15 0.065 0.08
1/10 0.085 0.11
1/8 0.115 0.14
1/6 0.145 0.17
1/5 0.18 0.22
1/4 0.23 0.28
1/3 0.29 0.36
3/8 0.37 0.38
2/5 0.39 0.44
1/2 0.45 0.57
5/8 0.58 0.63
2/3 0.64 0.68
3/4 0.69 0.79
7/8 0.8 0.94
1 0.95 1.11

For fine jewelry styles over 1 carat total weight, add the whole number plus the fraction above. For example, 1 3/4 ct. tw. would have a range of 1.69-1.79 ct. tw. and 2 ct. tw. would have a range of 1.95-2.11 ct. tw.

Some styles such as eternity rings have carat weight ranges that exceed the tolerances in the chart above. In these instances, refer to the minimum carat weight listed on the product detail page.

The listed carat weight for halo styles is based on a 6.5mm round center gem and may vary based on the size and shape of center gem.
