How to Measure Ring Size at Home
If you’re unsure about your ring size, these simple at-home methods will help you find your perfect fit.
Method 1: Use a Free Ring Sizer
A physical ring sizer is the most reliable way to measure your ring size at home.
Request our free, unisex ring sizer to find your perfect fit. It's reusable and designed to mimic the feel of an actual ring, giving you a true sense of how each size sits on your hand.
Wrap the sizer around the finger you'd like to measure and adjust it to the size that feels right. The perfect size will be snug enough not to slip off but loose enough to slide over the knuckle without too much resistance.
Method 2: Use a Printable Ring Sizer
If you need your ring size right away, download our printable ring sizer for a quick, at-home measurement. This option is helpful when you need a size fast, though we always recommend confirming with our free ring sizer or a Brilliant Earth showroom visit for the most accurate results.
What you'll need:
- Printer
- 8.5 x 11-inch standard paper
- Scissors
Steps:
- Print a Printable Ring Sizer & Conversion Chart. Set page scaling to "100" in your print settings and use 8.5 x 11-inch standard paper.
- Cut out the sizer. Follow the provided guidelines to carefully cut out the paper ring sizer and the slot as instructed.
- Wrap it around your finger. Slide the pointed end through the slit and gently pull until the ring sizer fits snugly around the base of your finger.
- Read your size. The number visible through the slit corresponds to your ring size.
Method 3: Use a Ring You Already Have
If you already own a ring that fits the intended finger, you can use it to determine your size without measuring your finger directly.
What you'll need:
- Printer
- 8.5 x 11-inch standard paper
- An existing ring that fits well
Steps:
- Print a Printable Ring Sizer & Conversion Chart. Set page scaling to "100" in your print settings and use 8.5 x 11-inch standard paper.
- Select a well-fitting ring. Use a ring that comfortably slides on and off the finger you're measuring.
- Match the ring to the chart. Place the ring directly over the printed circles until the inside edge aligns perfectly with one of the circle outlines.
- Check the alignment carefully. You should be able to see the circle just touching the inside edge of the ring without any overlap.
- Confirm the size. The number in the matching circle represents your ring size.
Method 4: Use a Tape Measure
A flexible tape measure lets you calculate your finger's circumference directly to determine your ring size.
What you'll need:
- A flexible tape measure
Steps:
- Wrap the tape measure around your finger. Choose the finger you plan to wear the ring on and gently wrap the tape around the base.
- Note the measurement. Record the point where the tape overlaps in millimeters or inches. The tape should be snug but not tight.
- Convert to ring size. Use a ring size conversion chart to match your finger's circumference to the corresponding ring size.
If you don't have a tape measure: Use string, yarn, floss, or a thin strip of paper. Wrap it around your finger, mark where it overlaps, lay it flat, and measure the length with a ruler. Then compare the measurement to a ring size chart.
Ring Size Measurement Tips
Getting an accurate measurement comes down to timing, technique, and a few details that are easy to overlook. These tips will help you get the most comfortable and reliable fit.
- Measure the hand you'll wear the ring on. Your dominant hand is generally slightly larger. Even a small size difference between hands can affect fit, so always measure the specific hand and finger where the ring will be worn.
- Factor in band width. Wider bands fit more tightly than thinner ones. Plan to size up by at least a half size for chunky bands (over 4mm) and size down accordingly for very thin designs (under 1.3mm). Ring sizes are measured in millimeters (mm), not inches.
- Account for temperature. Fingers shrink when cold and expand when warm. Measure when your hands are at a normal, comfortable temperature to avoid an inaccurate reading.
- Measure at the right time of day. Fingers naturally fluctuate in size throughout the day based on activity, hydration, and diet. The most reliable time to measure is toward the middle or end of the day, when your fingers are at their largest.
- Test for knuckle fit. If your knuckle is noticeably larger than the base of your finger, measure both areas and choose a size in between. The ring needs to clear the knuckle comfortably without sitting too loose once it's in place.
- Measure more than once. Finger size can shift slightly from day to day. Taking two or three measurements at different times and comparing results gives you a more accurate average.
- When in doubt, size up. If you fall between two sizes, go with the larger one. Rings can generally be resized down more easily than up.
