How does the custom design process work?

It starts with a conversation. You bring your ideas, inspiration, and must-haves to our design consultants, who can shape everything into a clear direction. From there, our GIA Graduate Gemologists help you select stones, our team builds a digital model for your approval, and our artisans hand-craft the final piece. You'll sign off at each major step before we move forward.

Why choose a fully custom design?

A custom design lets you build in the details that make your story yours: a birthstone, a meaningful engraving, a silhouette that doesn't exist anywhere else, or a detail that references another heirloom. Because you're not working from a template, there's no limit on shape, setting, or stone combination, including incorporating antique gold or gemstones into an entirely new design. It's the only way to get a piece that reflects your relationship at this level of specificity.


At Brilliant Earth, going custom also means direct, 1:1 access to an expert design consultant and GIA Graduate Gemologist throughout the process, so every choice, from stone selection to setting style, is guided by a deep level of expertise. You'll review and approve a computerized model before anything is crafted, so there's no guessing what the finished piece will look like. And because the design is created specifically for you, you can be confident no one else will ever have the exact same piece.

How long does it take to design a custom piece?

Most bespoke pieces take 4–6 weeks from your first consultation to the finished product. That timeline covers everything: refining your concept with a design consultant, reviewing a computerized model for approval, and having our artisans hand-craft the final piece. If you're working toward a specific date, let your consultant know early and we'll build the timeline around it.

How much does a fully custom design cost?

Custom engagement and wedding ring designs start at $2,000, though final pricing depends on your metal, design, center stone, and any accent gemstones. You'll receive a complimentary, itemized quote before committing to anything, so there are no surprises once the design is underway.

What's the difference between a custom design and designing it yourself?

With a bespoke design, you work one-on-one with a design consultant to create something from scratch, with no starting template or limits on shape or detail. Our design-your-own process means that you’ll choose your center stone and setting from our curated styles, then customize the metal and size. Both result in a ring that's entirely yours; the difference is whether you want to start with a blank page or a curated foundation.

What can Brilliant Earth create a custom design for?

We can craft a custom design for any type of jewelry! From engagement and wedding rings to earrings, bracelets, necklaces, gemstone jewelry, and diamond or lab grown diamond pieces, our team can create something entirely one of a kind.
