Hi, welcome to Brilliant Earth. My name is Ryan, I’m Brilliant Earth’s Senior Designer, and I’m here to walk you through our custom design process.
Most people look into custom design as an option to make something new and completely different for their future fiancé or loved one. It’s a great way to make something extra special.
The custom design process is very rewarding. It leads you through several approval stages taking a span of about four to six weeks where you can fine-tune the design and make sure every detail is absolutely perfect.
Because of this turnaround time it’s also good to plan ahead for this special piece. To get started in the process, we will need to create custom pricing information for you. In order to accomplish this, we will need to know a few of the basic details about the idea. Things like what recycled metal you would like to use, are there any precious gems in the piece.
Once we have these details covered, we should be able to create accurate pricing information for you to consider.
The most important part of the custom design process is developing the concept for the piece. It’s also the most fun. Sometimes people will bring us sketches of their idea that they have created on their own, other times photographs of other jewelry that their significant other wears, or just a description of their sense of style. No matter what stage of the process you’re at in figuring out what you need for your ring or special piece of jewelry, we will be able to help you from there and give you ideas as well.
If you need help visualizing your idea, we can help with this as well, whether it’s creating sketches or digital mock-ups of your idea. There are certain tools we can use to combine different design ideas, and send you images of these either remotely or show them to you in person, to help you visualize what your ring or piece of jewelry will look like before we ever get started.
During the design process at its earlier stages, you’ll see the piece in progress. This will usually be viewing a computer generated 3D model or sometimes a hand-carved wax model. Both of these types of models will give you the opportunity to see a 360 view of what the piece is looking like and decide whether or not any changes are appropriate.
Those approval stages present you with the opportunity to make edits to the design in progress. Once we get the design perfect and the design is approved we will make the piece in your chosen recycled metal and deliver the finished product in FSC certified packaging.

Our jewelry designers will take your ideas, drawings and images and work together with you to create a design concept. Our staff of GIA Graduate Gemologists can help you select the perfect conflict free diamonds and gemstones for your design.
Once your design concept has been finalized and an order placed, we will create computerized (CAD) model which displays multi-angled renderings of your piece. We will send your CAD model images to you to approve or request modifications to your design.
Upon your final approval, our production team will cast your design in the recycled precious metal of your choice. Your gemstones are then meticulously set by our expert craftsmen. Your beautifully finished piece is then thoroughly inspected by our Quality Assurance team and shipped in our distinctive, FSC certfied packaging.
