Cushion diamonds are one of the oldest diamond shapes, predating even round brilliants. Unlike the sharp corners of princess cuts, cushion diamonds feature softer, rounded corners true to their name. Elongated cushion cuts maintain these signature rounded corners while featuring a rectangular rather than square shape. They combine the brilliant faceting pattern that gives cushion diamonds their sparkle with proportions that exceed the classic 1:1 square ratio. This shape is growing in popularity because it creates a flattering, finger-lengthening effect. If you appreciate emerald cuts but want something with more sparkle and softer edges, an elongated cushion cut would be an excellent choice for your engagement ring.
Elongated cushion diamonds are less common than classic square cushions, with rarity increasing as the length-to-width ratio increases. Slight elongation (ratios up to 1.15) is relatively common, while significantly elongated shapes (ratios over 1.5) are less frequently produced.

Elongated cushion diamonds aren't necessarily more expensive than classic square cushions, as price depends on the combination of the 4 C's (cut, color, clarity, and carat), not just shape.

Elongated cushion diamonds are popular because they can appear larger at the same carat weight. Traditional cushion diamonds are known to hold their weight deeper than most other diamond shapes. Because carat is a measurement of weight and not dimension, a diamond that holds its weight at its bottom will appear smaller than diamonds that have more balanced weight distribution. By elongating the cushion, the weight gets distributed more evenly and can make your diamond appear larger.

A cushion diamond must have a length-to-width ratio of at least 1.1 to qualify as elongated. Cushion diamonds with a 1.1 ratio still appear relatively square, while diamonds closer to 1.5 look noticeably more narrow.

The length-to-width ratio you choose significantly impacts your elongated cushion's appearance. Most people choose ratios between 1.15 and 1.2, though elongated cushions can range from 1.15 to 1.4 depending on whether you want a wider or narrower look. Ratios between 1.06 and 1.10 often appear unintentionally imbalanced, while those exceeding 1.5 look extremely narrow.

Another helpful way to judge an elongated cushion’s shape is to look at its actual millimeter dimensions. The millimeter dimensions will precisely show how many millimeters long vs. wide the diamond is. Read our MM to Carat Conversion Guide to see the approximate length-to-width measurements for different carat weights.

  • Brilliant Sparkle: Elongated cushions often feature a "crushed ice" faceting pattern that creates exceptional fire and brilliance. Their large internal facets maximize light play and sparkle, which can be further enhanced by selecting excellent cut quality.
  • Larger Appearance: These diamonds appear visually larger than classic cushion cuts of the same carat weight due to their expanded surface area. Pair with pavé bands or halos to further enhance this size advantage.
  • Durability: The rounded corners resist chipping better than sharp-cornered cuts while providing a softer, less angular aesthetic.
