Once again, US diamond exports exceed imports–despite the fact that no diamonds are produced in the US.
2007 estimates show 1.366 million carats of rough diamonds imported into the U.S., while 1.788 million carats were exported from it.
We’ve noted that the US Government Accountability Office has previously reported on loose control in the US on diamonds in 2006, stating that “domestically, the U.S. systems for reporting rough diamond statistics and for controlling imports and exports of these diamonds are vulnerable to illicit trade…”
