Today, April 15th, a delegation of Native Alaskan and commercial fishermen will confront the mining industry giant Anglo American PLC about its proposed Pebble Mine project in Alaska. The open-pit gold and copper mine would occupy more than 30 square miles of the Bristol Bay watershed, at the headwaters of the world’s greatest Pacific Salmon breeding grounds. Both subsistence and commercial fishermen rely heavily on the salmon population for food and income, and the mine poses a major threat to the fishery and the native culture.
Brilliant Earth joins other jewelry manufacturers and purveyors in boycotting the mine, should it ever be built, and we will continue to offer only recycled and responsibly sourced gold. We will keep you updated on the reports generated from the shareholder’s meeting taking place today.
